Stay subtle: Rather than drawing an obvious line across the eyelids, make-up pros recommend using a pencil to fill in the spaces between each lash. Get your pencil as close to your lashes as possible and make a teeny dot between each one.
Smudge with your finger or a cotton swab. The effect is softer, sexier and smokier, without any obvious harsh lines. Kohl pencils are the softest and smudgiest of all.
Liquid liner can look harsh in daylight and is best under soft, evening light.
If you like the effect of liquid liners, new gel versions are easier to apply thanks to volatile silicones that glide the colour on smoothly, yet dry fast so they’re less easy to smudge.
For day, soften the liquid look by smudging with a little matching pencil over the top. The liquid liner will keep the pencil in place, and a smokier eye is forgiving if you get it slightly wrong.
