Once your skin is beautifully golden, the makeup for a tan is less about covering up, more about adding colour…
The right foundation
Your foundation shade should be a shade darker, or two over summer, but many of the latest do adapt with your skin tone – try Givenchy Teint Couture Blurring Foundation Balm, R705 and Catrice Even Skin Tone Beautifying Foundation, R149,95. Tinted moisturisers are also a great way to enhance a gorgeous glow, without having to invest in a whole new foundation product. They are light and make skin dewy, to help prevent flaking and dehydration in the heat. Clarins HydraQuench Tinted Moisturizer SPF15, R425, instantly gives my skin a peachy glow and is my new summer must-have.
Add colour to cheeks…
Bronzers are the unsung heroes of summer and perfect with a tan. The trick to using them right is to pick up the colour on a big blusher brush, then swirl it on the back of your hand first before you apply it to your skin.
It’s always better to start off lightly and build the colour. Dust the shimmery Smashbox Fusion Soft Light Bronzer, R330, on your nose, cheekbones and forehead for a fresh, just-out-of-the-sun look. Or blend a shimmering bronze cream into the cheekbones, temples and collarbones using Benefit Sun Beam, R365.
Finish it off with a pink blusher popped on the apples of your cheeks to create volume and to prevent the bronzer from looking muddy.
…Bronze your body too
Use instant colour to give your tan a flattering 3D effect that’s easy to control; the latest bronzers are a bit more matte, so you can contour your body brilliantly. Try Essence Sun Club Matt Bronzing Powder, R79,95.
A must-have for the summer is a hot red coral lipstick – it lifts a tan and makes you look more glamorous. Try Yardley Stayfast Coral Lipstick, R119,95; Rimmel The Only One Lipstick Cheeky Coral, R119,95; Maybelline Superstay Burst of Coral 455 Lipstick, R149,95, or Smashbox Be Legendary Cream Lipstick in Fireball, R280. If it stands out too much, matte it down by pressing the lip colour into your mouth with a tissue to take off the sheen.
