Cold winds, dry air and indoor heating are not your lips’ friends. If your usual balm isn’t cutting it and you find yourself constantly peeling or reapplying, it’s time to upgrade your winter lip care.

Here’s how to beat winter lips with easy habits and no-fuss fixes that actually work — because your lips deserve more than just a quick swipe of gloss.
1. Start with gentle exfoliation
Dead skin builds up quickly on dry lips, which can stop your balm from sinking in. Once or twice a week, use a gentle lip scrub (or make your own with sugar and honey) to buff away flakes.
Tip: Don’t overdo it. If your lips are cracked or bleeding, skip exfoliation until they heal.
2. Layer your lip balm, not just swipe
A quick swipe in the car won’t do much in winter. Instead, layer your balm like skincare: apply a hydrating base (something with hyaluronic acid or aloe), then seal it in with a thicker occlusive balm or ointment to lock in moisture.

3. Watch the ingredients
Not all lip products are created equal. Avoid balms with menthol, camphor or synthetic fragrance — they might feel tingly but can actually make dryness worse. Look for nourishing ingredients like:
-
Shea butter
-
Lanolin
-
Ceramides
-
Beeswax
-
Vitamin E
4. Hydrate from the inside too
Dehydration often shows up first in your lips. Keep a water bottle on hand (even if it’s cold out), and consider adding a humidifier to your bedroom to balance out dry indoor air.
5. Don’t lick!
It’s tempting when your lips feel tight — but licking them dries them out further. Saliva evaporates quickly and takes natural moisture with it. Keep balm within reach to avoid the habit.
6. Try a nighttime lip mask
While you sleep, your lips get a chance to repair. Apply a thick balm or a dedicated lip mask before bed to help replenish moisture overnight.
Bonus tip: You can layer a dab of petroleum jelly or lanolin over your balm for extra protection in harsh weather.
Winter lips are common, but they’re fixable. With the right care and a little consistency, you can avoid the cracked, flaky cycle and enjoy soft, comfortable lips — even in the middle of a cold snap.
