If you want bouncy, defined curls without damaging your hair with heat tools, it’s actually quite simple to pull off! Heatless curls are all the rage — and for good reason. They’re kinder to your hair, easy to do at home, and perfect for overnight styling.
Here’s how to master the art of heat-free curls.
Prep your hair
It is best to start with slightly damp hair — not dripping wet, as that can lead to frizz or hair that’s still wet by morning. If you’re starting with dry hair, you can lightly mist it with water or a leave-in conditioner spray. Apply a small amount of lightweight styling mousse or curl-enhancing cream for better hold and definition.
Choose your heatless curling method
There are lots of options to suit different curl styles and hair lengths:
1. The robe tie or legging method
Place a soft robe belt (or a pair of leggings) over your head like a hairband. Wrap sections of your hair around each side of the tie, adding more as you go along. Secure the ends with scrunchies or small elastics. This technique gives you big, loose waves.
2. Braids for natural waves
Divide your hair into two or more sections (depending on how tight you want the curls) and braid them before bed. The tighter the braid, the tighter the wave. In the morning, undo and gently separate with your fingers.
3. Twist buns or space buns
Twist sections of your hair and coil them into mini buns on top of your head. Secure with soft scrunchies. This method creates soft, voluminous curls.
4. Flexi rods or foam rollers
If you have them on hand, these tools work wonders for defined, spiral-like curls. Simply roll sections of hair around them and secure.

Give your curls enough time to set
For the best results, leave your heatless style in overnight or for at least 6–8 hours. If you’re short on time, you can try a couple of hours while working from home, but overnight gives the curls a chance to properly form.
The finishing touch
In the morning, gently remove your braids, buns, or rollers. Don’t rush — pulling too hard can create frizz. Use your fingers or a wide-tooth comb to separate the curls. Finish with a few drops of hair oil or a light-hold hairspray for added shine and staying power.
