Actives work. However, for sensitive skin they can be harsh. You don’t have to abandon your skincare routine, though. Choose gentler skincare and make simple swaps that will be kind to the skin but still highly effective.

We’ve all come to love active ingredients such as retinol, Vitamin C and AHAs. They’ve been powerful and wonderfully effective in skincare circles, earning well-deserved reputations. But truth be told, they can be harsh on more sensitive or reactive skin. Luckily a lot of thought has gone into developing gentler skincare products. So if your skin feels overwhelmed, irritated or tight, maybe it’s time to explore alternatives that deliver the same results but without the discomfort.
Here are more skin-loving swaps to consider:
1. Niacinamide instead of high-dose Vitamin C
Traditional Vitamin C can sting the skin, in which case niacinamide is a brilliant swap. It strengthens the skin barrier, brightens complexion and evens tone, all while being quite gentle.
2. Bakuchiol instead of retinol
Bakuchiol is plant-based, reduces fine lines and wrinkles and it’s not as aggressive as retinol. It’s safe to use during pregnancy and has a much lower risk of peeling or burning.
3. PHA instead of AHA
Polyhydroxic acids (PHA) has bigger molecules than AHAs and exfoliate in much the same way, so they penetrate more slowly and cause less irritation. They’re hydrating and perfect for reactive and rosacea-prone skin.
4. Azelaic acid for multi-tasking care
Azelaic acid is wonderfully versatile: it treats hyperpigmentation, acne and rosacea. It’s also anti-bacterial, fades dark spots and helps with inflammation. It’s a great all-rounder for sensitive skin.
5. Squalane for hydration
Squalane is a favourite in these quarters because it’s lightweight, mimics natural skin lipids and improves skin elasticity. It’s deeply hydrating and locks in moisture without clogging pores.
6. Lactic acid instead of glycolic acid
If you want the glow of exfoliation, lactic acid is a milder alternative. It minimises pigmentation but just over a slower period. It’s great for sensitive skin because glycolic acid can sometimes be a bit harsh on reactive skin types.
7. Centella asiatica for calming
Known for its soothing properties, cica reduces inflammation and supports skin healing. If you struggle with irritation and redness from acne, this is the ingredient to look out for in your skincare.

Actives are great but skincare doesn’t have to sting to work. Choose gentler alternatives and maintain a healthy, radiant skin while still protecting your barrier.
