Here are our top anti-ageing hair tricks, with a bit if celeb inspiration…
“Women often cut their hair short as they get older, which can look too mannish,” says Oribe, international hair stylist to stars such as Kate Winslet. “Stay looking feminine with longer layers and a sweeping fringe – they will loosen up your style.”
Shiny hair is ageless: the secret to getting a professional finish at home is to use a blow-dry product on towel-dried hair and dry as usual.
Keep a wave
Body and touchability go a long way to taking off years. Set hair on hot rollers or giant Velcro rollers. Either will give you beautiful hair, full of body.
“Get hair pieces; all the A-listers wear them,” says Oribe. “Or get a natural hair wig and cut it to a useful, smaller shape to merge and grip into hair. Then take it to your salon and get them to dye it to match your own colour.”
Be classic but clever
A classic bob looks ultra-chic, but can be a bit severe around the face. “You don’t want a curtain of hair falling either side of your face,” says award-winning hairdresser Steven Goldsworthy. “Tuck it behind your ears, grow it a bit longer to hide an ageing neck and grow a softer fringe.”
“Hair, like skin, needs moisture to stay looking youthful,” says hairdresser Andrew Barton. “Be religious with deep-conditioning repair masks at least once a week to boost the sheen and quality of your hair.”
Extreme stress often leads to premature greying and hair loss, as it affects the blood flow to the scalp and hair follicles. Supplement your diet with a good vitamin-B complex, especially biotin. If your hair is dry and brittle, take vitamin E to condition your locks from the inside. “Massage your scalp whenever you shampoo,” adds trichologist Philip Kingsley.
Breakfast like a king
…Lunch like a prince, and dine like a pauper, advises Kingsley. “Protein is key to great-looking hair, and since hair is protein (keratin), it’s vital to eat well. The most common reason for hair problems with women I see is they’re always on a diet,” he says.
Make the effort to tame frizz, as weathered-looking hair is aged hair. If yours starts to lack shine, it’s time for some TLC. Bump up on home treatments, or consider a professional treatment.
