Sometimes the best nights are the ones spent on a friend’s sofa, with snacks, music and no one watching the clock. You don’t need a big plan or a big budget. If you’re heading to a friend’s house, here are easy ideas to keep the evening fun, from silly games to quiet catch-ups. Pick one or mix a few, and see where the night takes you.

Game night
Pick three games, put out snacks and keep score all night. Board games, card games and charades all work, and a small prize for the winner adds some friendly competition.
Board game swap
Everyone brings a game they own, and you play the one nobody knows how to play. Working out the rules together is half the fun.
Cook-off
Split into two teams, pick one surprise ingredient and give everyone an hour. A blind taste test at the end decides the winner, so nobody can accuse the judges of cheating.
Potluck dinner
Everyone brings one dish, which keeps the cost and the cooking fair for the host. Add a theme, like dishes from a country you’ve never visited, to make it more exciting.
Blind taste test
Hide the labels on crisps, chocolates or fizzy drinks, then score each one. The big reveal of the brands is often a shock, because favourites are rarely what people expect.
Build-your-own night
Set up pizzas, tacos or burgers and let everyone make their own. Ask each person to bring one topping or filling so the host isn’t left doing all the shopping.
Movie marathon
Pick a theme, like rom-coms, throwbacks or scary movies, and vote on what to watch first. Add popcorn and blankets, and nobody will want to leave the sofa.
Living room karaoke
Put lyrics videos on the TV, use a hairbrush as a microphone and let everyone score each song. Nobody needs to sing well, because the worst singers often get the loudest cheers.
Paint night
Buy a few cheap canvases, follow a tutorial on the TV and finish with a “gallery walk” to show off the results. You don’t need to be an artist, and the funniest paintings usually win.
Slideshow night
Everyone makes five slides on something they’re passionate about and presents it to the group in three minutes, as if they’re trying to convince everyone to join in. It could be why we should all own a cat, why Sunday is the best day of the week, or why everyone should move to a small beach town. The more serious and dramatic the pitch, the funnier it gets. Finish with a vote on who was the most convincing.
Pamper evening
Bring face masks, nail polish and a good playlist. It’s relaxing and a great excuse to chat about everything and nothing while everyone takes a break from their busy week.
Deep talk night
Light some candles, bring a stack of questions and agree that phones stay away. It’s a lovely way to catch up properly and hear what your friends have really been up to.
