We have all been there. You put your makeup on in the morning feeling fresh, but by lunchtime your face feels heavy, greasy and stuffy. Thick makeup can settle into fine lines, block your pores and leave your skin uncomfortable all day.

The good news is that you don’t have to give up makeup to give your skin a rest. A few small changes to your routine can leave you with a healthy glow, without that feeling of wearing a mask.
Here’s how to keep your makeup light, simple and comfortable from morning to night.
1. Start with good skincare
Makeup looks better and feels lighter on skin that is well moisturised. When your skin is dry, it soaks up the moisture from your foundation and leaves a patchy, heavy layer behind.
-
Use a light moisturiser: Choose a gentle lotion or gel cream that sinks in quickly and doesn’t leave a sticky film.
-
Give your sunscreen time to settle: Daily sun protection is a must, but makeup applied straight over fresh sunscreen can clump. Wait three to five minutes before you start.
2. Go easy on primers
Some thick primers sit on top of your skin and can leave it feeling heavy and clogged, which doesn’t help if you’re prone to breakouts.
-
Try a hydrating face mist instead: A quick spray before you start gives your skin a little moisture, and another spritz at the end helps everything sit nicely without weighing it down.
3. Swap heavy foundation for a lighter tint
If you reach for a thick foundation every day, your skin has to carry a lot. Most of us only need a little coverage to even out our skin tone.
-
Try a skin tint or tinted moisturiser: These give a soft, sheer finish that evens out your colour while keeping your skin hydrated.
-
Cover only what you need to: Instead of covering your whole face, dab a little hydrating concealer just where it counts, like under the eyes or over dark spots, and blend with your fingertip.
4. Use less and blend well
How you apply your makeup makes a big difference to how light it feels.
-
Start small: Put a little dot of product on the back of your hand first. It’s much easier to add more than to take heavy layers off.
-
Use a damp beauty sponge: Gently bounce it onto your skin rather than dragging it across. It gives a soft, even finish and stops you piling on too much.
5. Choose creams over heavy powders
Thick powders can settle into your pores and dry out your skin, so your face looks flat and dull by mid-afternoon.
-
Switch to cream blush and bronzer: Creams melt into your skin and give your cheeks a natural, fresh finish, so your real skin still shows through.
-
Use powder only where you need it: If your forehead, nose and chin get shiny, press a tiny amount onto those spots with a small eyeshadow brush, rather than dusting it over your whole face.
Healthy skin has natural warmth and texture. Letting your skin breathe isn’t about going completely bare-faced. It’s about choosing lighter products that bring out your best features without hiding them. Your face will feel fresher, lighter and far more comfortable all day.
