Your holiday skincare routine should be about protecting, hydrating and simplifying — not packing your entire bathroom cabinet.
Optimistic about packing shows its true colours when its time for a holiday. Suddenly, you need a serum for every possible skin concern, three moisturisers, multiple masks and enough beauty products to suggest you may never return home.
But when it comes to holiday skincare, more isn’t necessarily better. Between long flights, changing climates, sun exposure, air conditioning, salt water and unfamiliar environments, your skin is already dealing with enough. The smartest approach is a streamlined routine built around the essentials – protect, hydrate, cleanse and repair.
Start with a strong SPF
If there is one product that deserves prime real estate in your suitcase, it is sunscreen.
Daily broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher should be your non-negotiable, particularly when you’re spending more time outdoors. Apply generously to the face, neck, ears and any exposed areas, and reapply regularly when you’re outside — especially after swimming or sweating.
Don’t forget the easily overlooked areas: hands, chest, shoulders and the tops of your feet.
And while SPF is essential, it isn’t permission to spend unlimited time in direct sunlight. A hat, sunglasses, shade and lightweight clothing are still some of your best holiday beauty accessories.
Hydration is your holiday skin’s best friend
Planes, air conditioning, heat and increased sun exposure can all leave skin feeling dry and uncomfortable. Your holiday routine doesn’t need to become complicated; it simply needs to support your skin barrier.
Look for hydrating ingredients such as glycerin, hyaluronic acid, panthenol, squalane and ceramides. A lightweight hydrating serum underneath your moisturiser can be particularly useful if your skin feels tight.
And don’t confuse hydration with drinking excessive amounts of water. Stay normally hydrated according to your thirst and environment, while letting topical skincare do its job on the skin itself.
Keep cleansing gentle
Holiday skin does not need to be scrubbed into submission.
If you’re wearing sunscreen, makeup or spending the day swimming, cleansing is important — but avoid overly aggressive cleansers or frequent exfoliation that can leave your skin feeling stripped.
A gentle cleanser in the evening is usually enough to remove the day’s build-up. In the morning, depending on your skin type, a simple cleanse or even a water rinse may be all you need.
The goal is clean, comfortable skin, not that tight, squeaky feeling.
Don’t over-exfoliate
A holiday can seem like the perfect time to achieve that smooth, glowing complexion, but this is not necessarily the moment to introduce a new acid, peel or aggressive exfoliating routine.
Your skin is already experiencing increased environmental stress, particularly if you’re in the sun. Over-exfoliation can compromise the skin barrier and make irritation more likely.
If exfoliation is already part of your routine and your skin tolerates it well, keep it conservative. Otherwise, save the intensive treatments for when you’re home.
Pack one reliable moisturiser
You don’t need a separate moisturiser for every occasion.
Choose one dependable formula that suits your skin and climate. If you’re heading somewhere hot and humid, you may prefer a lighter gel-cream. For cooler or drier destinations, a richer barrier-supporting cream may be more comfortable.
Ingredients such as ceramides, glycerin, squalane and panthenol can help support the skin barrier while keeping the routine uncomplicated.
Give your lips some attention
Lips are particularly vulnerable to sun, wind and dry air, so don’t let them become an afterthought.
Pack a nourishing lip balm and, ideally, a lip product with SPF for daytime. Reapply regularly, particularly if you’re outdoors.
Because cracked lips are hardly the souvenir anyone wants to bring home.
Treat post-sun skin gently
Despite your best intentions, there may be days when your skin feels warmer, drier or more sensitive after being outside.
This is the time for soothing and moisturising, not a complicated treatment marathon.
Reach for gentle, fragrance-free products designed to support the skin barrier. Avoid applying potentially irritating actives to skin that feels sun-stressed, and remember that significant sunburn is skin damage — not simply something to be “treated” with a cooling product.
If you develop severe blistering, extensive swelling, fever, dizziness or significant pain, seek medical advice.
What about makeup?
Holiday makeup can follow the same philosophy: lighter, simpler and more forgiving.
A tinted SPF or lightweight base, cream blush, mascara, brow product and a hydrating lip colour can create an effortless look without layering on unnecessary products in the heat.
And if you’re swimming or spending long days outside, remember that makeup isn’t a substitute for sunscreen.
The ultimate holiday beauty rule
Your skin doesn’t need a holiday from skincare — it needs a simpler version of it.
Protect it from the sun. Keep it comfortably hydrated. Cleanse without stripping. Support the skin barrier. Avoid unnecessary irritation. And let your routine become part of the holiday rather than another thing to manage.
Because the real travel beauty edit isn’t about having the biggest toiletry bag. It’s about knowing exactly what your skin needs — and leaving the rest at home.
