One minute you have plump and radiant skin, the next minute you catch your reflection and see tired-looking skin and a dull appearance. It happens. But the good news is you can do something about it. Sometimes all you need is to return to the basics.

Have you ever caught a glimpse of yourself in the mirror, gasped, and then wondered why your face suddenly looks more tired than you feel? You may notice dull, dry or less plump skin, while fine lines seem more noticeable. Often, it isn’t that your skin has suddenly ‘aged’ overnight. Changes in hydration, your skincare routine and your environment can all affect how rested your complexion looks.
Your skin might be dehydrated
The biggest culprit may be dehydration. When the skin lacks water, it can appear dull, feel tight, and fine lines become more visible. Cold weather, air conditioning, hot showers and not using enough hydrating products can also contribute.
Look for ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, glycerin and panthenol, which help attract and retain moisture. Apply hydrating products to slightly damp skin and follow with a moisturiser to help seal it in.
You may be overdoing your skincare
You won’t necessarily get better better skin if you pile on more and more products. Frequent exfoliation, strong acids, retinoids or using too many active ingredients at once can leave the skin irritated and compromised.
If your complexion suddenly looks rough, dry or unusually sensitive, try simplifying your routine for a while. A gentle cleanser, hydrating serum, moisturiser and sunscreen may be all you need while your skin settles.
Your glow needs protection
Sun exposure is another huge reason skin can lose its youthful-looking radiance. UV damage can lead to pigmentation, uneven texture and collagen breakdown over time.
Make broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher the absolute non-negotiable final step of your morning routine, even when you’re not spending the day at the beach or it’s not sunny.
Don’t forget the basics
A tired-looking complexion can also be exacerbated by lack of sleep, stress and environmental factors. We realise that no skincare product can replace rest, but a consistent routine can help your skin look healthier.
Keep things simple: cleanse gently, hydrate generously, moisturise and wear sunscreen every day. If your skin looks tired, the answer may not be another expensive product – it may simply need a little more moisture and a little less irritation.
