It’s called a cortisol cocktail and it’s the latest wellness trend on TikTok. People say it lowers stress hormones, eases afternoon fatigue and boosts energy. However, experts say the name is misleading although the drink can support hydration. A cortisol cocktail doesn’t reduce cortisol levels, nor does it cure chronic stress.
What is a cortisol cocktail?
A cortisol cocktail is a non-alcoholic beverage usually containing orange juice, coconut water, magnesium powder and a bit of sea salt. Some people add collagen powder and cream of tartar for potassium. The trend comes from the idea that lots of stress can leave the body depleted of electrolytes and vitamin C.
The adrenal glands need vitamin C and other nutrients to function as normal, which is why proponents believe the drink to support adrenal health. However, it should be noted that there’s currently no scientific evidence that consuming a cortisol cocktail lowers cortisol.
Does it work?
This is where we need to look at individual ingredients. Coconut water offers natural electrolytes like potassium, orange juice has the vitamin C, magnesium is important in muscle and nerve function, and sodium maintains fluid balance. The drink may help restore fluids and electrolytes especially if you’re recovering from illness, been exercising frequently or are dehydrated.
But if you have chronically elevated cortisol levels, a drink won’t solve the problem. Proven solutions include getting enough sleep, managing stress, exercising regularly, eating balanced meals, and limiting alcohol and caffeine.
How to make a cortisol cocktail
If you do want to make one for hydration, here’s a simple version:
- 250 ml coconut water
- 125 ml orange juice
- A pinch of sea salt
- 100–200 mg magnesium powder
- Ice, if preferred
Mix everything together and drink chilled.
The bottom line
A cortisol cocktail is a deliciously refreshing drink full of electrolytes, but it shouldn’t be seen as a miracle stress remedy. It supports hydration and well-being but ultimately the best way to manage stress and maintain balanced cortisol levels are cultivating healthy lifestyle habits.
