Di Thompson never imagined that she would one day stand before the world, presenting her very own fragrance creation. “It really is a dream come true,” she reflects, recalling a lifetime dedicated to all things beauty and olfactive magic. Today, Dimanzi stands proud as a South African, award-winning fine fragrance collection—a brand that seamlessly blends the sophisticated elegance of French chic with the vibrant, soulful essence of Africa.

The name itself, Dimanzi, is a beautiful poetic marriage of identities. It combines “Di” with “Manzi,” the Zulu word for water, paying ultimate homage to Di’s deeply rooted African heritage. This connection to the land is further mirrored in the brand’s striking visual identity. The zebra, a symbol of her ancestral Burchell lineage and her lifelong love for classic black-and-white elegance, serves as the primary inspiration behind the exquisite Dimanzi packaging.
But to truly understand the soul of Dimanzi, one must travel back in time to the bustling streets of Jeppestown. Introduced to the beauty and perfume realm at a young age by her mother, June, who worked in the industry, Di spent her school holidays at a local factory. There, surrounded by glass vials and aromatic compounds, she eagerly assisted in packing various lotions, potions, and, of course, perfumes. These formative experiences left an indelible mark on her spirit. Immersed in what felt like a magical world, she recalls those childhood memories with immense fondness: “Such a magical world for a young girl, and the memories will stay with me forever.”
From passion to European prestige
This early fascination quickly evolved into a lifelong calling. Di pursued her education at Jeppe Girls High, mastering the French language before graduating in 1971—a skill that would later prove prophetic. Further studies in Fine Art and English followed at Wits University, refining her aesthetic sensibilities. Then, in 1975, an exceptional opportunity arose that would alter the course of her destiny. Di enrolled in elite beauty therapy and makeup courses at the esteemed House of Guerlain on the Champs-Élysées in Paris. It was here, in the heart of France, that her passion for fragrances deepened into true expertise.
Returning to South Africa with a wealth of international knowledge, Di established the Le Visage Boutique Salon in Bedfordview in 1988. Yet, the dream of creating her own fragrance house still lingered. Inspired by the memory of her late son, Rowan David Thompson, she finally took the courageous leap into formulation, encapsulating her unwavering dedication to the industry. Thus, Dimanzi emerged—not just as a business, but as a profound labour of love.

All production processes take place in South Africa, actively supporting local initiatives and small businesses.
