Every week, it feels like there’s a new must-have beauty product launching. A better vitamin C. A reformulated retinol. A viral serum promising glass skin in seven days. Our feeds are flooded with “you need this” energy – and slowly, our bathroom shelves start to look like a mini beauty retailer.
But here’s the honest question we need to ask ourselves: Are we actually benefiting from all these products, or are we just chasing novelty?
The beauty launch cycle is designed to make you feel behind
The beauty industry thrives on momentum. Newness sells. Limited editions create urgency. Influencer “first impressions” make us feel like if we don’t try it now, we’ll miss out on better skin forever.
In reality, most new launches aren’t reinventing skincare – they’re repackaging familiar ingredients with a fresh marketing angle. That hyaluronic acid serum you’re eyeing? You probably already own three versions of it.
The problem isn’t curiosity – it’s constant replacement without reflection.
When “trying everything” starts working against your skin
Layering too many products or constantly switching formulas can compromise your skin barrier, trigger breakouts or sensitivity. make it impossible to know what’s actually working or lead to product fatigue (mentally and physically).
Great skin isn’t built from abundance – it’s built from consistency. Skin thrives on routines it recognises, not on chaos.
Why do more products not mean better results
A thoughtful beauty routine doesn’t mean a 12-step process. It means understanding what your skin actually needs, using products long enough to see real results and allowing ingredients to work synergistically, not competitively.
Many of us aren’t finishing products before we buy another one from a different brand — we’re interrupting their progress. That retinol you stopped using because a new one launched? Your skin never got the chance to adapt or improve.
How to build a thoughtful, intentional beauty routine
1. Audit what you already own
Before buying anything new, ask yourself – Do I already have a product that does this? Or is the new launch solving a problem I actually have—or one I’ve been told I have?
You might be surprised how complete your routine already is.
Pro tip: Expired beauty products is very dangerous and hoarding multiples of the same product is signing yourself up for one of them to expire.
2. Focus on core categories
Every routine only truly needs:
- A cleanser
- A moisturiser
- A sunscreen
- One or two targeted treatments
Everything else should support, not overwhelm.
3. Give products time
Most skincare needs 4–12 weeks to show results. Constantly switching products resets the clock.
Commit to finishing products before replacing them – your skin (and wallet) will thank you.
4. Be selective with trends
Not every viral product is meant for you. Ask yourself –
- Does this suit my skin type?
- Does it align with my routine – or complicate it?
- Am I buying this out of curiosity or insecurity?
Trends should inspire, not pressure.
5. Treat beauty like a ritual, not a race
A thoughtful routine is calm, grounding, and repeatable. It’s something you return to daily – not something that stresses you out.
Luxury isn’t owning more products.
Luxury is knowing what works and sticking to it.
The shift we’re seeing – from excess to intention
There’s a quiet beauty movement emerging – one that values fewer products, better formulations, and mindful consumption. It’s about listening to your skin instead of the algorithm.
You don’t need every launch. You need what works for you. And sometimes, the most powerful beauty decision you can make… is choosing not to buy anything at all.
