A new kykNET series titled Tussen mure is set to premiere on Sunday, 5 October at 17:30, offering a rare and intimate look at men and the spaces that shape them. Inspired by Masculus – The Male Domain, a monumental coffee-table book by Leoni Smit, the thirteen-part series steps beyond its pages to explore masculinity, design and the quiet human stories found within four walls.

Where Masculus was a study in form and philosophy — a carefully constructed seven-kilogram reflection on the architecture of male life — Tussen mure brings that world to life in motion. It is less about precision and more about presence, capturing gestures, humour and the unguarded moments that reveal character.
Directed by Elmi de Pauw, the series translates stillness into energy. Her direction is intuitive and vibrant, turning interiors into living stages and showing how personal space can become a mirror of identity. Each episode centres on a different man, exploring the subtle connections between who we are and where we live.
Alongside De Pauw, co-presenter Eugene Coetzee — founder of Eugene Coetzee Décor & Design Consultants — helps guide the conversation. His approach to design is rooted in emotion and storytelling, treating books, rooms and objects as carriers of personality. For Coetzee, film becomes a natural extension of that belief: moving pages that reveal new layers of meaning.

Smit describes the series as a companion rather than a continuation of her book. Coffee-table books, she explains, are meant to live in the open — bold and unapologetic — and Tussen mure breathes alongside that spirit, rather than trying to replicate it.
Produced by Walla Films with the support of IFX Brokers, the project brings together design, psychology and narrative in a way that feels distinctly South African. It balances intellectual weight with warmth, turning interiors into stories about the people who inhabit them.
Ultimately, Tussen mure is not just about walls, furniture or style. It is about the laughter, the solitude and the unspoken lives that unfold within private spaces — a portrait of masculinity that is tender, imperfect and deeply human.
The series premieres on kykNET (DStv Channel 144) on Sunday, 5 October at 17:30, and will also be available on DStv Stream and Catch Up.
