You can feel the air has changed and everyday feels crisp with winter, so naturally outdoor entertaining slows down and it’s tempting to drag all your outdoor furniture inside but who has the time (or space) for that?
Luckily, there are easy and effective ways to protect your patio setup from the elements without turning your home into a storage unit. Whether you have a cozy balcony setup, a full backyard lounge, or just a couple of chairs on the porch, these tips will help preserve your investment so it’s ready to shine again when the sun returns.
Invest in high-quality furniture covers
This is your first and strongest line of defence. Waterproof, UV-resistant covers tailored to your furniture’s size will shield it from rain, frost, wind, and even a few icicles. Look for ones with tie-downs or elastic hems to keep them secure during storms. Bonus points if they’re breathable—this helps prevent mould and mildew buildup underneath.
Elevate and protect the legs
Moisture collects on the ground, especially during cold and rainy months. Use rubber pads, tiles, or furniture risers under chair and table legs to keep them off wet or icy surfaces. This can prevent rotting (if your furniture is wood) and rusting (if it’s metal).
Apply protective sealants or weatherproofing sprays
Wooden furniture, in particular, benefits from a coat of sealant before winter hits. Choose a water-repellent preservative or a clear wood sealer that adds an extra layer of defence. For metal pieces, anti-rust sprays can do wonders. Fabric cushions? Use a fabric protector spray to help them repel water and stains.
Remove and store cushions separately
Even if you’re leaving your furniture outdoors, always remove any soft furnishings or cushions. Store them in a dry, indoor area—or at least in a waterproof deck box or storage bench. Wet cushions are a breeding ground for mold, and cold temperatures can break down fabric over time.
Create a DIY outdoor shelter
Don’t have a shed? No problem. Use a waterproof tarp and some tent poles or PVC pipe to create a temporary canopy over your furniture. It’s not the prettiest solution, but it works—especially if you’re expecting snow. Make sure there’s some ventilation to avoid condensation buildup underneath.
Rearrange for shelter
Move your furniture closer to the house, under an awning, or onto a covered porch if possible. Even a slight bit of overhead protection can make a huge difference in minimising moisture and frost exposure.
Clean before you cover
Never cover dirty furniture! Debris like dirt, pollen, or leftover food can cause staining or attract pests. Wipe everything down with a mild soap solution and let it dry thoroughly before storing or covering. Think of it as putting your furniture to bed for the season—clean and cozy.
Rotate and check monthly
Make a habit of doing a quick check every few weeks. Lift the covers, shake out moisture, and inspect for any signs of damage, mold, or rust. This simple step can help catch small issues before they become expensive repairs.
You don’t need to haul your patio furniture inside every time it gets chilly to keep it in great shape. With a little prep, some weatherproofing, and a few clever hacks, your outdoor pieces can hibernate safely right where they are—and be ready for use as soon as spring peeks through the clouds.
Your future self—lounging in the sun with a cold drink—will thank you.
