The South African lifestyle and weather make a timber deck a wonderful focal point for a good old-fashioned “kuier.” Good-looking, well-kept wooden decks are not only a pleasure, but they also greatly enhance your home.
To get the most out of your deck and to ensure that it remains beautiful for many years, it is essential that the deck be treated and protected by using the correct product for the type of timber used to construct the deck.
It is not necessary to use expensive hardwood types for a deck. With the right treatment a deck constructed from SA Pine or other indigenous wood can be just as beautiful and long-lasting as a hardwood deck, at substantially lower cost.
Protecting your wooden decking from the harsh South African sun will extend the life thereof significantly.
Choose the correct product and you’re halfway there.
Woodoc recognises that dense (hard) woods and porous (soft) woods require different treatments. Porous wood will readily accept penetration and consequently a hard-finish sealer. Dense wood on the other hand resists penetration, making conventional sealers unsuitable for application.
Woodoc DECK Sealer
A low-gloss, tinted sealer that is hard-wearing and high in UV-absorbers. This product has been specifically developed for porous wood types, such as SA Pine and porous Meranti. Regular maintenance is important. When it is time for maintenance, clean down with Woodoc SteelWool and mineral turpentine. Re-apply Woodoc DECK Sealer.
Woodoc DECK Dressing
A low-gloss, tinted oil finish for application to hard, dense timber like Balau, Rhodesian Teak, Garapa, Saligna or Iroko. When the surface appears dry, and weathering starts, merely clean down with mineral turpentine and then re-apply Woodoc DECK Dressing.
Woodoc Water-Borne DECK
Based on the very latest European technology, specially adapted for South African conditions, Woodoc Water-Borne DECK is fast drying and easy to apply. Being water-borne, it is environmentally friendly, and brushes are simply cleaned with water.
Woodoc Water-Borne DECK is available in a low-gloss/matt, clear/tinted finish. The tinted Woodoc Water-Borne DECK (Natural, Oak, Mahogany, Teak and Imbuia) is only available in a low-gloss-finish, but it may be overcoated with Woodoc Water-Borne DECK (Matt, Clear) to achieve a matt finish.
Woodoc Plus-Life PRIMER
The companion product to Woodoc Water-Borne DECK is Woodoc Water-Borne Plus-Life PRIMER. For the very best results, Woodoc Water-Borne Plus-Life PRIMER should first be applied to clean, dry and sanded decking timber, extending the life of Woodoc Water-Borne DECK. One coat of Woodoc Water-Borne Plus-Life PRIMER should be over-coated with three coats of Woodoc Water-Borne DECK.
Restoring weathered decks
All is not lost with untreated decks that have weathered badly and are unsightly. They can be restored, easily and effectively, with Woodoc Wood Reviver, the ideal product to restore grey, weathered wood. After restoration, enhance and protect your deck with the appropriate Woodoc DECK Product.
Some tips for the very best results when treating your deck:
- Preparation is the key to success. New wood requires only a light sanding to ensure it is smooth, but previously treated wood should be well-sanded to remove all the old sealer/varnish.
- Wood should always be smooth, dry and clean before applying any surface treatment. Any surface treatment applied to wet or damp wood is sure to fail.
- When sealing with Woodoc Water-Borne DECK, apply one coat of Woodoc Water-Borne Plus-Life PRIMER first, to prepare the wood and ensure maximum protection. Then apply three coats of Woodoc Water-Borne DECK. Sand lightly when weathering starts and apply another coat of Woodoc Water-Borne DECK.
- When using Woodoc DECK Sealer or Woodoc DECK Dressing, three coats must be applied. Clean with Woodoc SteelWool and mineral turpentine when weathering starts and apply another coat of Woodoc DECK Sealer or Woodoc DECK Dressing.
- The coverage of Woodoc Sealers is 1 liter of product per 3.3m2 of wood for three coats. Usually this means three liberal coats, but if you have product left over after three coats, keep on applying until the prescribed quantity of product is applied to the wood. Skimping on product creates long-term problems.
- Note: It is a good idea not to use the deck for 48 hours after the last coat had been applied.
- Keep the deck clean: sweep pools of water, plant matter, dust or bird droppings off the deck as soon as possible.
- Do maintenance at the first signs of weathering of the surface coating.
- Note: Tinted products last longer than clear products in exterior conditions. It is therefore recommended that tinted products are used to treat decks.
