How to save money on your summer holiday

With summer holidays fast-approaching, our minds are wandering to far-off countries, sapphire seas and clear skies. Here’s a list of our top 5 tips on how to plan a fabulous holiday, even if you’re on a budget.

Shop around for a good exchange rate

Despite the Rand’s unfortunate condition, there are still ways to avoid heavy exchange fees. Rather than settling on the first rate, do some research and shop around – you may find a cheaper one.

Alternatively, avoid taking wads of cash on your holiday and use a preloaded cash card, such as the Multi-currency Cash Passport from FNB or Standard Bank’s Travel Wallet; they work somewhat like a debit card and can be used at several auto banks overseas.

Book last minute

Everyone has different opinions on when to book a trip. However, you’ve probably missed the ‘11 months before’ mark.  Why not be spontaneous and book one or two days before you want to travel? Most travel providers offer great last minute deals to fill any empty hotel rooms. They often drop the prices substantially, which means you could nab a five-star holiday for half the price!

Villa vs hotel

If you’re travelling in a large group it might be more cost effective to rent out a villa or holiday home rather than paying for separate hotel rooms.

If you book through a reputable site, you’ll probably find a wide variety of villas, homes and apartments that’ll give you a, home-away-from-home feeling.

Package it up

Package deals often offer the best deals around and, they make life very easy. Book through one of a holiday company, like Thompsons Holidays, Pentravel or Club Travel, and let their agents do the running around for you. They’ll organise flights, accommodation and car hire and the combination can work out cheaper.

Once you’ve landed

Destination immersion is the new travel buzzword, so, after you’ve settled in at your hotel, check out the local spots.

City guidebooks often suggest great local hangouts where you’ll find amazing fare at reasonable prices. Plus, you’ll be part of a much more authentic experience!
